The Simpsons’ pay tribute to Miyazaki

East has influenced as West, as tonight’s episode of The Simpsons’  will be “Spirited Away”. The sequence below is a lovely farewell tribute to legendary Japanese animator/director, Hayao Miyazaki. This past Summer, Miyazaki
announced his retirement and that his final film will be The Wind Rises.

The Simpsons have put their own personal touch on a outstanding homage to all the Studio Ghibli classic. From Homer stumbling the Spirited Away streets to Otto as,The Cat Bus from My Neighbor Totoro., and of course there’s Ralph Wiggum gender-bending as Ponyo, and Patty and Selma double as, Kiki the witch, from Kiki’s Delivery Service. How many references to Miyazaki films can you spot? Check out this annotated version from Slate, if you’d need a guide.

There have been questions as to: What the Skinner-kite represents? Fox officials says it’s just a touch a whimsy, but we gather it’s a hint at The Wind Rises, which be will released to US theaters in February.

Tune in to The Simpsons- Tonight at 8pm EST.
