Hey guys, I want to give a heads-up on one of my favorite J-Rock bands to listen to. They are simply known as DOES. It’s a three-member group that was formed in the Fukuoka Prefecture back in 2000. They are currently signed on to Ki/oon Records. DOES is known for their guitar riffs and catchy beats. The band consists of (from left to right):
Yasushi Akatsuka – Bassist, Chorus
Wataru Ujihara – Lead Vocals, Guitar
Kesaku Morita – Drums, Chorus
I first heard these guys from the anime series, “Gintama”. They did the 5th Ending song for the series. It was entitled “”Carnage” (修羅 Shura ). I fell in love with the song, especially the chorus. The song became so popular that the full version of the song was played in the opening of the 62nd episode of Gintama. “Carnage” was also their first single to make the Oricon charts.
The relationship between Gintama & DOES didn’t end there. DOES’ 6th single, “Cloudy Weather” (曇天 Donten ), was featured as the 5th Opening Theme for the series. I thought “Carnage” was good, but “Cloudy Weather” was even better. The song also became popular, and was an even more popular song than “Carnage”. The full version of the song was featured as the ending song for Gintama Episode 105 and “Cloudy Weather” was ranked as the 3rd most popular single in overall Japanese music ranking in 2008.
DOES reminds me of old-school rock music. That’s all it is. Maybe that’s why I like them so much. Not just because they did songs for one of my favorite anime series, but they sound similar to some old-school American bands. No rap/hip-hop/electronic nonsense (not that there’s anything wrong with it, but too many bands try to incorporate other genres into their music), DOES’ music is just pure rock. Plain & simple. The choruses to their songs are really, really good. Wataru’s voice and the other band members’ voices compliment each other pretty well.
DOES’ next single will be out soon and it’s a big one. Their new single is called “バクチ・ダンサー” (Bakuchi Dancer). It’s also the theme song for the upcoming Gintama movie “Gintama: Shinyaku Benizakura-Hen (銀魂 新訳紅桜篇)”. The PV is already out and it is also played in the commercials for the movie. The song carries on the tradition on what makes DOES awesome: strong guitar play, catchy beat, & great choruses.
